That’s right kids. It’s time to make our list and check it twice. No, not for who’s been naughty or nice?
Where is your business in 2012 going to come from? Do you need some new opportunities? New people? New connections? Perhaps you are looking for a job?
Maybe you need to do some Networking! Not the door to door knocking type, but getting out to some business events and meeting other business people that you might be able to refer business to, and in turn, they refer potential clients or job leads back to you! Now there’s a novel idea, eh?
But, as you head out the door to your next networking event, perhaps you should have a plan. What do you really want to accomplish, and how are you going to go about it?
Another good idea is to meet and/or know the organizer of the event. Try to meet them before or after the event and thank them for putting it together. This can put you on the top of the list for other events, maybe even a VIP event that you might not otherwise be invited to!
If you attend an event on a regular basis, it’s just natural to hang with the people you know…..NOT! Now, you and that other person can team up to meet other people, but don’t just hang with the people you know. Remember, our goal is to make new contacts! Make sure if you see someone that is new, make them feel welcome. Go one step further and invite a new person that you think could benefit from the event.
Where to Network?
Well, if you ask most real estate agents/brokers, they will tell you everywhere! And to some extent, that is true. Whether you are having your oil changed in your car, picking up your dry cleaning or visiting the vet with your dog, there is always an opportunity to meet someone!
One place you might look, is Networking For Professsionals (NFP). I use to host one of their local events here in Atlanta, and even wrote a blog about it the beginning of this year. NFP is truly what it says….networking. Not a bunch of guys or girls looking for a date (ah, come on, you all know you have been to those types of events before) but professionals looking to network. Be sure to check out their website, they host events in various cities around the country!
As you put your plans together for ’12, make sure networking is a part of them. You always need to be expanding your network!

You learn something new everyday! With the GATech campus being located in Midtown and Midtown West, I’m learning more and more about how I can be of service to the students and faculty of GATech. And it that quest, I learn some pretty intersting stuff!
The GA Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has a center in Smyrna. The Georgia Tech Research Institute Cobb County Research Facility was opened off of Atlanta road on some 52 acres of land hidden from view almost 30 years ago. Renovations to the 160,000-square-foot facility, started in 2009 and were completed earlier this year. GTRI employs 291 people at the site.
The facility houses two major labs for the Institute, the aerospace transportation and advanced systems lab and the sensors and testing magnetic applications lab.
I knew that GA Tech had far reaching impact….I just didn’t know they had other facilities in the Metro Atlanta area!

Looking for a new home in a new town or city is always a daunting one for sure. For some, it is even their first experience in their destination state. Relocation clients move for various reasons, either coming to work or go to school, a second home location, retirement, to be located near friends or family or just for a change.
As Realtors®, we do everything that we can do to help our clients settle into their great new communities.
Here are a few tips to help if you are relocating to Intown Atlanta:
1. Find a Realtor® who is willing to spend time working with you prior to your trip. I know that I spend a great deal of time as the eyes and ears of my clients to help them make the most of their very precious time here to select a home. To do that, we need to get to know you and what you are needing and wanting in a home. We start by letting the Internet do the work for you. We send you all listings that meet your criteria. And as we research together, we can refine that search.
2. Get on an auto-email alert system. This one is the greatest time savers! This will automatically send you NEW LISTINGS and PRICE REDUCTIONS for you to research and learn more about the Intown Atlanta real estate market.
3. Set aside ample time to look at homes. Ideally, you want to set enough time in your trip to not only see the homes you have on your short list, but also to explore your new community and get some of those job or school details tended to as well. This is where your relationship with your Realtor® really is a time saver. Let them pick out the very best candidates for you to see first. If we don’t find something in the first few homes, we can keep looking. Promise! Don’t make the mistake of thinking you need to see it all, or you are missing something. This is where the auto-email system really helps you!
4. Bring your pre-approval letter. Often we have out-of-town clients who forget this all important step. Your loan officer will appreciate you having that in hand. It can be challenging when we are on time constraints to track down your loan officer to send this.
5 Take notes and bring your camera. Unfortunately because we are on a time restraint, we will be looking at more homes than is ideal. They will blend together. Use the sheets to help you remember. Discard those homes you don’t like. Write notes on the ones that you do. And use your phone or camera to snap a picture of a few things that attract you to the new home.
6. Relax! Don’t worry, it is our job to find the home. Spend some time exploring and having fun! We are full of suggestions about things to do in your destination city and nearby places. Just ask! We are all passionate about our cities and would love to share our passion and knowledge with you!

Ok. You’ve toiled and troubled and now you’ve got that college degree. No more checks from Mom and Dad….this is the REAL world now. So, you want to go where they is a job of course, but you still want to enjoy life, right? After all you are in your 20’s and have the world in front of you.
Well, then take a look at the recently released list of Top Ten Cities For Young Adults from Kiplinger.com. How does such a list come about and what was considered? Theylooked for cities with high starting salaries for college grads (sweet!), using data from Payscale.com.; a cost-of-living score near or below 100, the national average, and affordable monthly rents. And perhaps the most important to the 20-somethings….cities where the percentage of residents ages 20 to 29 is near or above the average of 13.8%.
And the Top 10 Cities For Young Adults are….
Ok, Ok…I hear you already saying Chicago, NYC and D.C.? You must be kidding. (I kinda thought the same thing to be honest!) But I think you always need to look at survey’s like this and realize they are taking lots of averages of things to come up with their numbers.
Take Atlanta as an example….they list the average monthly rent at $897. I’m here to tell you that you won’t be paying that in Midtown Atlanta for rent! Now, if you are willing to head OTP (Outside The Perimeter) your chances will greatly improve on that number.
But the importat point here is this…Atlanta got ranked with some pretty rockin’ cities, don’t you think? And while I am NOT a 20-something, I can tell you that Atlanta has some fun place to hang out, like Midtown Atlanta, Little Five Points and Virginia Highlands. I pretty happy to be part of the Top 10 Cities For Young Adults!
So, if you just graduated from school, and you are looking for a cool place to hang your hat….welcome to ATL! Give me a call, we’ll check out some neighborhoods and get you settled in a great rental, or if you really want to plant some roots, I can show you some great deals on condo living in Midtown, Midtown West, Buckhead and beyond!

STORY UPDATE:
I brought this to you back in February of this year. In a story from 11Alive News, Mayor Kasim Reed was to have attended the ground breaking today (September 27) at Phipps Plaza. (I missed this story or I would have been there!) LegoLand Discovery Center is sure to be a hit! I wonder if I’m to big to go?
If you’ve ever shopped Atlanta, you know that the two premiere places to shop are Lenox Square and its neighbor across Peachtree, Phipps Plaza.
Well, in 2012, Phipps is going to be home to a pretty cool children’s attraction…the Atlanta Legoland Discovery Center.
Merlin Entertainments, the London-based company that owns the concept, will build a $12 million, 32,000 sq ft plus attraction on the 3rd floor of the famed Buckhead shopping “destination.” (Heavens, you would NEVER call Phipps a “center!)
The Atlanta Journal Constitution quoted William Pate, President of the Atlanta Convention & Visitor Bureau; “Atlanta has become one of the country’s most popular family travel destinations, and the new Legoland Discovery Center will provide another great experience for visitors.”
The article further describes what the attraction will include:
A visit to the Dallas Legoland site lists rides and attractions such as Lego Factory, Miniland and Lego Racers. (I’m liking the sound of this…)
So, does Legoland sound like a fit amongst the posh stores like Nordstrom, Gucci and Giorgio Armani? I guess Merlin does. We’ll have to wait till 2012 to find out!
