Atlanta Start up Company Receives $4M from GATech Technology
Technology developed by researchers at the GA Tech and Emory University for delivering drugs and other therapeutics to specific locations in the eye provides the foundation for a startup company that has received a $4 million venture capital investment.
The Atlanta-based startup, Clearside Biomedical, plans to develop microinjection technology that will use hollow microneedles to precisely target therapeutics within the eye.
Georgia Tech College of Computing 2011 Holiday Gift Guide
Ok, when I first saw this alert this morning for the Georgia Tech College of Computing 2011 Holiday Gift Guide, I thought….HOLY COW!!! I can imagine the totally awesome stuff these geek students are going to offer up. Of course, they will most likely be “super gifts” that are outside my gifting budget.
Well, I was kinda right. In fact, they are not gifts you can purchase at all. But instead, the Georgia Tech College of Computing 2011 Holiday Gift Guide is actually a unique spin on the traditional holiday gift guide, showcasing some of the year’s biggest research stories from the College.
“They sometimes bristle at being called ‘elves,’ but we’ve got a College full of faculty and students who’ve been working very hard on these projects all year,” said Zvi Galil, John P. Imlay Jr. Dean of Computing. “We are, obviously, having a bit of fun in showcasing our research like this, but there’s also a serious point. Part of our mission is to help improve the world through education and research, and the projects in this Gift Guide can legitimately be counted among our efforts to give back to society—indeed, some are explicitly intended as computational ways to serve the social good.” (See the rest of the article here.)

GA Tech Research Institute Reaches Beyond Midtown Campus
You learn something new everyday! With the GATech campus being located in Midtown and Midtown West, I’m learning more and more about how I can be of service to the students and faculty of GATech. And it that quest, I learn some pretty intersting stuff!
The GA Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has a center in Smyrna. The Georgia Tech Research Institute Cobb County Research Facility was opened off of Atlanta road on some 52 acres of land hidden from view almost 30 years ago. Renovations to the 160,000-square-foot facility, started in 2009 and were completed earlier this year. GTRI employs 291 people at the site.
The facility houses two major labs for the Institute, the aerospace transportation and advanced systems lab and the sensors and testing magnetic applications lab.
I knew that GA Tech had far reaching impact….I just didn’t know they had other facilities in the Metro Atlanta area!
GATech Systems Engineering Improves Visitor Experience at Georgia Aquarium
It is always good to see when a local university is called into action to help fix a local business problem. Such is the case with the flow of visitors at the Dolphin Exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium in Downtown Atlanta. GATech Systems Engineering logistics expertst carefully studied how guests would move and recommended ways to improve their experiences while minimizing congestion, prior to the opening of the exhibit eariler this year.
The new 84,000-square-foot AT&T Dolphin Tales attraction, which opened in April 2011, includes a theater with performances of Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins in a Broadway-style production with live actors and trainers, all set to an orchestral soundtrack. The exhibit also features a lobby area where visitors can be face-to-face with the dolphins through a 25-foot viewing window.
Eva K. Lee, a professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech and Georgia Tech graduate student Chien-Hung Chen created RealOpt-ABM, a large-scale modeling and decision support software suite that could model guest movement through the entire aquarium.
Some pretty cool things come out of Georgia Institute of Technology, located in Midtown Atlanta!
