This article appeared in the AJC this morning. Of course, this is nothing new, and is happening in cities and states around the country. But, I especially liked a comment towards the end of the article:There has been one positive development as the properties sit idle. To offset maintenance costs, Pullman Yard and the former state farmer’s market have become location shoots for several Hollywood movies, among them “The Blind Side,” “Fast and Furious 5,” “Footloose,” “The Lottery Ticket,” “Ben 10” and “Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son.”
In the past two years, the Georgia Building Authority has generated more than $250,000 from film productions, Pando said.
Yet the State Legislature is talking about changes to the current incentives offer to the ever-growing Georgia Film Industry. Sure, why not take money out of the state pockets. And the people that are employed from this industry!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When the state bought the former World of Cola-Cola building four years ago, the plan was to turn it into a museum, but the economic downturn scuttled that idea.
The same happened to plans to tear down the former Georgia Archives building just a few blocks away. The state intended to demolish the 45-year-old structure, but couldn’t afford the $5 million bill.
Similar to most local commercial property owners, the state hasn’t escaped the area’s real estate collapse.

Sidewalks In Midtown Atlanta

You know what they are. You probably use them is some form or fashion at least once a day. Sidewalks.
A sidewalk is defined by Dictionary.com as, “ a walk, especially a paved one, at the side of a street or road.
So in an urban environment, you’ ve got them everywhere. And they require maintenance. But the $100 question is WHO is responsible for that maintenance.
Sidewalks In Midtown Atlanta
Well, in the City of Atlanta, YOU, the property owner to which that sidewalk abuts to are responsible for that maintenance. Yep. NOT the city of Atlanta, but YOU, the property owner. So, that might explain why some of Atlanta’s sidewalks, and especially in Historic Midtown, are in tough shape. You are probably going to spend $2000-3000 for something INSIDE your home, and not on the sidewalk in front of it!
If you have a sidewalk you traverse on a regular basis, but find it dangerous, say from tree roots or just a state of disrepair, you can contact the City of Atlanta Department of Public Works at 404-330-6240 or e-mail Commissioner Richard Mendoza at rmendoza@atlantaga.gov.
Additionally, Midtown Neighbors’ Association allocates a limited amount of money in the form of a matching grant to assist a homeowner who wants to repair their sidewalk. More information is available here.
Southeastern Flower Show – Atlanta GA February 25-26, 2011
Traditions are such a wonderful thing. Something takes time to get started, but then it becomes an annual event, and we look forward to it each year.
Southeastern Flower Show Cobb Galleria Centre, February 25-26, 2011
The winter we’ve experienced here in Atlanta certainly does not compare to what our neighbors to the north have gone through. But, I think everyone is ready for spring. And a visit to the Southeastern Flower Show is JUST the ticket you need. If if you live in a condominium, you’ll appreciate the displays and the spring-like feeling you’ll have once you leave this event.
This year, the Southeastern Flower Show is chaired by my good friend, Mary Norwood and her husband, Felton. The theme, “InTune with Blooms” will emphasize the enjoyment of music in the garden and outdoors and will feature live performances throughout both days.
Professionally designed gardens will have been built INSIDE the Centre, and you will have the opportunity to visit, explore AND ask questions. Some of the past displays I’ve seen included waterfalls and fish ponds that we easily 500 sq ft in size!
It’s a pretty amazing site.
General Admission tickets are $18 on show days, but you can save $3 per ticket by purchasing tickets in advance at the Southeastern Horticultural Society’s website.
