An interesting perspective from one person that could see themselves renting “forever” to a Midtown Atlanta condo buyer that said he could buy cheaper than rent, and did not want to one day say….”Wow, I missed the opportunity….”

The State of Georgia has returned the Sales Tax Holiday for August 10-11, 2012.
The exemption does not apply to:
Clothing accessories, jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eyewear, watches, watchbands, cellular devices,furniture, computer-related accessories designed for recreational use, items used in a trade or business or for resale, or rentals; or
Sales in theme parks, entertainment complexes, public lodging establishments, restaurants, or airports.
So, now would be a great time to get out and get some clothes for the kids, or yourself for that matter. (I’m seeing some new shoes!) as well as general school supplies. My office supplies are pretty stocked up, but I’ll be looking to see what I might save a few pennies on since I won’t have to pay the sales tax!

A portion of a Midtown city block that includes well-known modernist architect I.M. Pei’s first office building in Atlanta is set to become a large mixed-use development.
A joint venture between real estate investment company Sereo Group Inc. and developer Faison Enterprises recently bought the 2.5-acre site bounded by Ponce de Leon Avenue, North Avenue, Piedmont Avenue and Juniper Street for $6.5 million. The partners are focusing on urban infill redevelopment sites in Southeast cities.
The developers have submitted plans to the Midtown Development Review Committee for a mixed-use project that will include 321 apartments and 8,600 square feet of retail space. It will be called 131 Ponce de Leon Ave.

In an amazing victory to preserve history in Atlanta in place of the modern skyscraper, it appears the Crum & Forster building has survived yet another attempt to send it into history via a wrecking ball.
I’d like to see some really creative, out of the box thinking in using this site as GATech seems hell bent on doing! It might require getting the city to close the street adjoining the building…but basically build over the top of the building on stilts, like the big brother watching over it’s Grandfather.
That would be some architecture, but I don’t think ATL has that kind of desire or creativity to build something with THAT much WOW factor.
